The Faroe Islands and the European Union sign bilateral Fisheries Agreement
Following negotiations between delegations from the Faroe Islands and the European Union, the two parties signed a bilateral Fisheries Agreement on Thursday 13 March on mutual fisheries relations in 2014. The Agreement has been signed, after the successful conclusion of the Coastal State Agreement on mackerel between the Faroe Islands, the European Union and Norway.
According to the Agreement, the Faroe Islands and the European Union will give reciprocal access of an amount of up to 46.000 tonnes and 25.000 tonnes on mackerel and blue whiting respectively, to vessels of either Party fishing in the waters of the other Party.
As well as this, the Agreement includes an exchange of quotas between the two parties on various fish species. Furthermore, the parties agreed on a mutual exchange of catch statistics and other control measures.
Minister of Fisheries Mr Jacob Vestergaard is pleased with the Agreement and says: “Traditionally the Faroe Islands and the European Union have had a close and good relationship in fisheries and this Agreement is an important step in building up these relations”.
