Coastal state negotiations on mackerel in London 23 – 24 October 2013 will resume

The coastal state negotiations on mackerel between the Faroe Islands, the EU, Iceland and Norway, have been in London in the days of 23 – 24 October. The negotiations were characterised by a large turnout of delegates, signalling the great interest in the issue. As well as this, the negotiations were characterised by a constructive dialogue among the parties.

The coastal states were presented with the scientific advice for the 2014 fisheries of mackerel, from the International Council of the Exploration of the Seas, along with the results of scientific surveys, conducted by some of the coastal states, on the size of the mackerel stock.

The parties did not discuss the management and sharing arrangements for 2014 but will address this question at a forthcoming meeting.

The Faroese Minister of Fisheries, Mr Jacob Vestergaard, is pleased with the constructive dialogue during the negotiations and hopes that it will result in an objective and equitable allocation of mackerel, essential for the Faroe Islands.
